On today’s episode, Elle and Taylor sit down with Rose Vandercapellen, who is here to share her birth story with us. They talk about consent and advocating, regrets and what she wishes she knew back then, sneaky burritos, tsunami-style water breaking, and the wonders of witch hazel.
Despite being educated with Bradley Method birth classes, and having a carefully thought-out birth plan that had been discussed and signed by her OB ahead of time, Rose found herself time and again being ignored and her choices and preferences being overridden as she labored. She talks about regretting not trusting her gut and changing OBs before it was too late.
Rose also shares some funny stories with us. One features a sneaky burrito; another a tsunami-style breaking of her waters, and a third featuring her son and chicken nuggets.
We ask her about how her husband, Darren, stepped in and helped advocate for her during labor. She shares the different ways he stepped in and acted as a go-between for her and the nurses in the birth room.
Lastly, we talk about the wonders of witch hazel pads, and Rose shares some parenting tips that she’s picked up in her 8 years as a mama.

Want to hear another birth story? Listen to Episode 4: Elle’s Birth Story. Elle is the host of Birth Re-Imagined, a mother of 2 kiddos, and had one midwife-attended natural birth at a birthing center, and one OBGYN-attended natural birth at a hospital. It’s a good thing Elle has a pretty go-with-the-flow attitude, because her second child was born with a congenital heart defect, which meant some big changes to her original birth plan – even as she labored!
